New Works!

Wow, can you believe that Halloween is here? It is one of my favorite holidays. I love all the costumes, haunted houses and ghostly nights. What a fun time! And if you don't like trick or treating, it's a great night to curl up on the couch with a scary movie.

And when Halloween is gone, it is time for November. The brisk chill in the air, and the holidays soon to come. Getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the smell of great tasting food. The family and friends and the magic that comes with this time of year.

Photographer's Favourite

Photographer’s Favourite features two specially selected images from a Photographers of Etsy team member, and their personal thoughts about them. The first photo is from their own collection, and the other is from a fellow teammate.

This week's contribution is from James Warren, a student at Sonoma State University.

Of his own photograph, James says :

"This image is one of my favorites from my Untitled Landscape series. The tonalities of the large format negative paired with the supple tones of the fiber base paper really work together to make an exquisite print. I love the duality of the content, a mixture of an urban neo-power source and rolling hills of crops."

James has chosen this image by Christian Nze, who is originally from Congo and now living in France.

This is what James has to say about his chosen image :

"Christian Nze's work has always captivated me. His images are printed so beautifully! The echo of curves throughout the image does a fabulous job of leading the eye. The presence of the penguin is ambiguous. It is unclear what state the animal is in, and where exactly it is due to the abstraction of the environment. It almost seems to be magically suspended in space. The image is both well conceived and well executed."

Photographer's Favourite is compiled by Rhiannon Connelly. She’s a professional portrait and fine art photographer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Most of the photographs she currently shows on Etsy are what she calls “Polaroid Paintings” – using the nearly extinct SX70 Polaroid film to create dreamy images halfway between photograph and painting. One of the best things about this technique is that after taking the photograph most of the work is done in a cafe! See more in her Etsy shop , her website and her blog.

Please
contact Rhiannon if you would like to participate in a future Photographer's Favourite.

New Works!

I've been thinking about nature this week, I think maybe because the seasons are changing. Even though the fall is gorgeous and winter is so pretty, I'm already missing the warmer months as I put my jacket on before I go outside. I'm noticing that the light is changing. It splashes onto corners of brick buildings and the sidewalk, and when the wind blows I stop to listen for the rustling of leaves. I look to see them blowing down the street and I think to myself I can't believe how quickly the year flew by. If I start to feel a little blue about it, all I need to do is check out the photography on Etsy to perk me up. It really works! I chose these photographs this week because some of them remind me of the warm sun on my skin, cool lake waters and the promise of new seasons. And I chose a few others to remind me of the dazzling photo ops the rest of the year will bring.

Wanderings: True North

I recently returned from a quick getaway to Montréal, Québec (see my photo, above) and I have to say - what a visually inspiring place! From the beautiful, old city of Montreal to the farmlands of Quebec, the area is a landscape photographer's dream. After my trip, I decided to go on Etsy and check out what POE Team members had to offer for Canadian photography. Below are some shots that particularly blew me away. Hopefully they will inspire you to further explore Canada on Etsy or even grab your camera and head north...

Bay of Fundy Boardwalk - dsbrennan

Diana says that Bay of Fundy Boardwalk was in fact taken in Canada - in Fundy National Park of Canada in New Brunswick. It was taken mid-morning, along a hiking trail near the Point Wolfe campground.

The Old Fox Tower - Starsign

Craig tells us that the fox tower itself is located at Boonstra Farms, in the municipality of Rockwood, Manitoba. He took the photo from the middle of the corn maze that the owners of Boonstra Farms construct each fall. The fox tower has been open for people to tour during the Hallowe'en season in past years. The photo was taken on September 28, 2008 in early afternoon -- 1:05 pm, central time to be precise.

Winter - lynann
(Vancouver, British Columbia)

Wonderland - uncommondepth

Roberta says that Wonderland was taken in Red Deer, Alberta at one of the popular recreation areas. It was taken in January - probably mid-day. But this far north means mid-day sun is not that high in the sky.

Boats - Celticcatphotos

Husband and wife team Ken and Cathy Gangwer tell us that this shot was taken in 2005 in Labrador. Newfoundland, Labrador and Nova Scotia are their favorite places to shoot.

Kelowna Sky - theeye

Ellen tells us that this photograph was taken on Belgo Road which is just outside of town, and is full of orchards and farms. The sunset in Kelowna is difficult to capture as we are essentially in little bowl, surrounded by mountains. When the sun starts to set, I often take a quick car ride up to the Belgo area, where there is a ridge and a canyon, where I can observe the sky. What the view lacks in terms of the actual sunset it makes up for in spectacular colours, especially if there are clouds that evening. I'm awestruck by the colours Mother Nature paints the sky. We as artists can only strive to recreate such beauty in our own works, but Mother Nature is the clear master here. I noticed by the end of the summer, I usually wasn't the only person up there on the ridge inspired to take pictures at sunset.

Lucie Wicker is a Boston, Massachusetts-based photographer who enjoys taking pictures wherever she goes. She is particularly interested in nature, landscape and travel photography. Her work can be viewed on her website, blog or in her Etsy shop.

Welcome to you, new members!

One of my favorite colors is white. No matter that it is way after Labor Day and no one is supposed to wear it or be looking at it or thinking of it, I am telling you anyway. I like it year round. There are a number of reasons why I am so fond of it -- whipped cream, foamy oceans and delicate tuberoses come to mind -- but mainly I think it's because my two giant dogs prevent me from having any crisp and elegant-looking clothing, linens or furniture in this beautiful color. It just doesn't go with the tumbleweeds of pet hair flying around my house on any given day. For now, I'll admire that Vera Wang shirt and round tufted ottoman I saw at the store from afar, and will wear jeans and grey polar fleece until further notice. But I'll also have my cake and eat it too right this very minute by peeking at these images from some of our newest members.

Beauty in What's Left Behind

We leave so much behind us, and we avert our eyes to keep from seeing what's really going on. If we really, really look there is a beauty in those things that is sad and somehow hopeful all in the same intake of breath. What comes to your mind when you see these powerfully quiet images?

New Works!

Ever have a day when you feel like you've lost your mind? You try and talk and things don't come out right, you forget things, well today was that day. I just remembered my article yesterday and so I didn't prepare all week like usual. So these are the images that completely stopped me in my tracks. They, like me, are kind of all over the place - different subjects, but all beautiful.

And I usually do just images, but MelissaLund's TTV Calenders really struck me, I just love them and so had to add them here also. What a cool Christmas gift, and at an awesome price too!
