Painting with light

I first became interested in photography twenty years ago, when I was sixteen and began a photography course at school. My interest soon became an obsession as I marvelled at the idea of “painting with light”.
Light Ray, 8x12"
My wonderful Dad built me a little darkroom in the corner of our spare bedroom and I spent many hours processing my own films and experimenting with different developing techniques. I enjoyed photographing all sorts of things, but it soon became clear to me that my passion was for all things natural... flowers, shells, leaves, plants, landscapes and the ocean.

My career as a Primary school teacher meant that photography became a hobby rather than something I could focus on full time, until recently. My family and I moved from the UK to Sydney and once again I began carrying my camera with me at all times, and once again I had the time to devote to it.

Beach Prints, set of nine 5x7
I especially love photographing the ocean and our beautiful local beaches. I am fascinated by the movement of the waves and the colour and form they create. I enjoy creating images that capture the mood of summer, of relaxed and happy times, images that make you feel you can smell the sea air!

Dreamy Photo of the Day!

It's been awhile since I posted here. Lots of life has been happening to me since last post. I have a daughter, she's about to turn one. I have a new car. I have also lived through an emergency operation, but none of that here. I am happy happy happy to be here!!

Now on to the Dreamy Photo of the Day!

This photo is available in this shop here. I love it! What do you think? The colors are perfect. Captures the happy mood perfectly! The bokeh is incredible. I always appreciate happy photos that just remind me of childhood & carefree times!

If you have a dreamy photo you'd like to see here. Message me in my etsy shop & I'll be happy to post it.

Wandering Eye

It's been over 13 months since my last post.  In that time I've been caught up in life and haven't had much time for some things...this being one of them.  Yesterday, on a whim, I took a look at some of the work that was getting ready to fall off of Etsy.  The following images are some of what caught my eye.  Enjoy!

From the Collaboratory

Saying I'm overdue for a post is 'way beyond understatement. Let's just say this whole new dashboard is, well, new to to me. My last post was March 2011, if memory serves.

Since then, much has happened, including acceptance into a couple of juried shows. Very exciting. But I've also become super-conscious of how much there is to learn. That has led to some workshops and study. Long way to go.

One thing I have learned, though, is to appreciate is the Northwest's bright overcast, which most of us complain about throughout much of the year. For photographers, though, it's what award-winning photographer Thomas Sawtell characterizes as "a giant diffuser." Here are some images from our area to illustrate what he means.

Dreamy Photo of the Day!

Flutter

I love photography! It is by far one of my favorite hobbies. I never get tired of looking at photos & dreamy art. Often times it can wake up the eyes if you need a little oomph, it's better than a cup of coffee! Sometimes it can be so relaxing to look at & calming. I wonder if I should take a dreamy photo along with me in high traffic situations. I bet I'd be a calmer driver! Isn't this photo just so wonderful? Her dreamy surreal shop is located here. Thanks for looking & checking out the POE team's blog. --Heather :)

Photo of the Day!

Hey everyone,
I'm working on a new idea for our blog. Hoping I can keep up with it, but with a baby on the way and two little boys, we shall see! Since I do the updates for the POE Flickr group, I'd like to pick out a photo for each day & post it here. I get to see the images first, and often times fall in love with many of them & feel they need to be better showcased! Such talent our team has. Of course, this also depends on you! If you allow your photos to be posted & set up for that via flickr. One other requirement is please do not put links in the text area on flickr. Your photos will not get chosen for the stream if that happens. Sorry, but it's the rules according to flickr. If you have your shop listed in your flickr profile, I will also link to it.

And without any further ado, today's photo:

Painterly Magnolia

This lovely photo comes from this shop on etsy.

Hope you like it! Puts me in the mood for spring flowers & showers!
You can reach me here on flickr. Or here on etsy, or here on facebook.

Like the first day of spring.

Post contributed by Anna Delores Photography.

Y'all know that spring 2012 OFFICIALLY begins tomorrow, March 20?  That's right: the vernal equinox dictates that spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere on March 20, 2012, at 1:14 A.M. (EDT).

I think the reason and ways to celebrate here at POE are obvious.  There was such an abundance of phenomenal work on the theme of "springtime" that I further narrowed our showcase today to "Ttv" (through the viewfinder) photographs.  Yes, these are mostly floral photos, but I've included a babbling brook and some butterflies for good measure.  ;)

Enjoy our warm welcome of the new season, from the Photographers of Etsy!

Self Portraits

First and foremost, welcome back to the Photographers of Etsy (POE) blog!  We plan to keep things a little livelier around here, so be sure to come back soon and check in often.  :)

I'm not sure why it took me so long to notice, but lately I've been appreciating the plethora of self-portraits among POE members.  There are some really breathtaking images out there that POEs have been taking of themselves!  Needless to say, I'm impressed -- AND inspired to soon put myself in front of my own lens.

Check out some of the dramatic, honest, surreal, and just plain lovely self portraits I've wrangled here.  Have YOU taken any self-portraits lately?
