We have run into a snag or two here on the POE team blog. I am able to post, but due to some blogger changes I can no longer add or delete shops on the side bars. I've contacted a few people for help & no one else has any ideas either. So I went ahead and created a tumblr blog for us here.
I've still been posting here, but feel that putting everything together on one blog will be easier. If things change in the future (I am able to get ahold of an admin here) I'll see if it's worth coming back here. In the meantime, I invite you all to come & check out our tumblr blog!
All my best, Heather, Team Captain for POE!

Photo of the Day!
Hey everyone,
I'm working on a new idea for our blog. Hoping I can keep up with it, but with a baby on the way and two little boys, we shall see! Since I do the updates for the POE Flickr group, I'd like to pick out a photo for each day & post it here. I get to see the images first, and often times fall in love with many of them & feel they need to be better showcased! Such talent our team has. Of course, this also depends on you! If you allow your photos to be posted & set up for that via flickr. One other requirement is please do not put links in the text area on flickr. Your photos will not get chosen for the stream if that happens. Sorry, but it's the rules according to flickr. If you have your shop listed in your flickr profile, I will also link to it.
And without any further ado, today's photo:

This lovely photo comes from this shop on etsy.
Hope you like it! Puts me in the mood for spring flowers & showers!
You can reach me here on flickr. Or here on etsy, or here on facebook.
<3 Heather :)

Mind's Eye - Manipulated Memories
Photography is the ultimate tool for preserving memories. For many it’s also a wonderful tool for creating the feel of memories. What a powerful ability a photographer has to make that feeling. It takes a thoughtful technique and a great sense of imagination to intentionally create an image that makes another person respond personally. With manipulated photography an artist can evoke a sentimental quality that whispers something of our own past. A deliberate twist of contrast, a particular use of lighting, sandwiching images, a selective use of focus, added text - these manipulations can propel the viewer into something powerfully nostalgic. Now, there are images, for example, of beaches that make me think of my own times at the beach. There are cityscapes that remind me of my own experiences too. But what I am referring to now are images that are unrelated to my human experience and yet somehow feel familiar. The images feel like the past. Here are a few images with the ability to do just that.

Mind's Eye: Inspiration
As a new contributor to the POE blog I will be concentrating my efforts on showing off some of the POE's best abstract and manipulated images. I love everything about Abstract art in any form. I know it's not for everyone and I have spent many hours talking to my father about how it isn't all "rubbish". Besides appealing graphical details, the idea(s) behind each work is highly important to intriguing the viewer. Manipulated photography can purposefully create an idea, a mood. It can make us forget that it takes skill and work to not just take a photo but create a photo. Abstract and manipulated photography can not only draw the viewer into the image, but into the imagination of its creator.
One of the philosophies I maintain is that art is everywhere I look. A speckled ground can make me think of Jackson Pollock, aged paint flaking off a wall reminds me of Clyfford Still. From abstract expressionists to painters of the impressionist period, masterpieces can be found ready to shoot in any location at any moment. Well, here, allow me to show you what I mean...
Take for example this photo, "Mixed Cultures" by our very own POE member UNIkalinka. It instantly made me think of the painter Morris Louis. Just one more reason to check out UNIkalinka's shop!
In another example, PhotogenicGallery's "A Poppy Eye Viewpoint" incorporates soft focus of the red petals and sharp, focused detail of the dark center to create an image reminiscent of "Poppy by Georgia O'Keeffe.
I had to look twice and read the description to make sure that this next work was in fact a photograph. The high contrast and crisp detail look so much like a line drawing. Photopia has described her photo "Abstract Architecture" as "Escher-ish" and I couldn't agree more.
Although the beautiful color field photos of FrancesPhotography remind me of Mark Rothko, I have to admit that I love these photos even more than the masterpieces that hang in museums all over the world. I don't just love these photos for their graphical detail and color choices, but also because I can't quite figure out how much of these photos were from her natural surroundings and straight shooting, and how much was altered digitally if at all. These photos, such as "Journey II" featured below, pull me in and allow my mind's eye to wander and wonder much more than the very famous works of Rothko and other color field masters.
Inspiration's like these can also be seen in manipulated photos. In the digital darkroom it's possible to re-create the mood and styles of famous work such as Andy Warhol's silk-screened images (below, right). Claudia Lord's "Daisies 3" is done in just such a way (below, left).
In this final example, PrettyPetalStudios has manipulate her image "The Tree" in such a way as to create an antique appearance and the feel of a drawing/painting. I wonder if she thought of this Japanese print as much as I did when she was creating it.
Photography does such a great job of holding moments still and capturing everyday beauty. Inspiration can pop up on any street corner while waiting for a bus, on the wall of a building close to where we work, or outside our home... it's everywhere and it's just a matter of noticing and creating our own masterpieces.

New Collaboration opportunity...
Back in September 2009 Bill of HouseofSixCats told us about an exciting collaboration he had in the works, creating ceramic coaster sets using images from other artists and photographers. To see these collaborations click here.
Since the collaborative venture for coasters has gone so well, he would like to remind you that the coaster collaborative offer is always open for anyone who would like to participate and now he is excited to offer you the ability to have your images on
NIGHT LIGHTS!
Here is what he is offering for the lights. He will turn your image(s) into the translucent face of the night light and send them to you. He would give you the link for the light kit, and all you would need to do is glue the face (what he sends you) to the clip from the light kit. Very easy.
If you are interested, contact Bill by convo or email and he will give you the specifics.

Mosaic Monday: Black and White
Usually I hide on the other side of this blog, but I will be alternating with Sue posting the Mosaic Mondays, so today I shall poke my tiny head out to share some babble with you; and photos too, of course.

B&W photography remains to be a popular form of photography even when there is the option for so much color. Certain moments are best captured with dramatic high contrast - deep blacks and stark whites, or made soft by an even shade of gray.
1. Sooke River - Moonrise Photographics
2. Half Dome in the Distance - Gestures Photography
3. Grimm Path - Miss Quite Contrary
4. Bird Silhouette II - Ketzel Photography
5. Silhouette Of Lace - Bucks County Frames
6. Towering Trees - Create Love Laugh
7. MIE-01 - James Warren Photography
8. Book - Eiwen
9. Reflective Image No. 3 - Barbra Ziemer Photo
10. Trying to Breathe 2 - Light Leaks
11. Tidal Rivulets - Photo Grunt
12. Close II - Valeria H

Wanderings: Summer Road Trip Week 6
My dear POE, let's finish up the East Coast part of our cross country travels with a bit of New England charm. This week's journey includes stops in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont.
Crank that air conditioner up, and enjoy the ride!
Michelle Campbell-Zurek is an artist/photographer from the east coast who is wide-eyed and smitten with the crazy town called LA. When not on a quest to capture light and stop time, she can be found painting and ingesting gobs of sweets & tea. All are welcome to stop by the Urban Junkies Artist Lounge, as well as Michelle's photography shop, art shop and website.
